Weedon Group helps rebuild a school in Nepal

In August 2015, a team of staff and directors of the Weedon Group completed the Three Peaks Challenge, raising nearly £6000 for charity from sponsorship. Some of the money went to projects aimed at educating children in Nepal and news has now been received as to how the money has been spent.

The money went a long way. It contributed to three projects:

  • rebuilding a classroom in one school
  • erecting a fence at another school to prevent students from falling over a steep drop at the edge of the grounds
  • funding a women’s organisation which makes loans to those in need and uses the interest paid to buy land for the village school and to help children of the poorest families to be educated

The Weedon team included six walkers and two drivers. To complete the challenge, the walkers had to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, and to travel between the three peaks, sleeping in a minibus, all within a 24-hour period – 13 hours’ walking plus 11 hours’ driving.

Peter Weedon, Operations Director of the Weedon Group, nominated Nepal to receive some of the sponsorship monies, after he visited the country on a family holiday. He said:

“To call it the Three Peaks Challenge is a bit of an understatement! We trained hard, but it was still a real test of endurance. We all managed it within the allotted 24 hours though, and we are delighted that our efforts have produced so much for the people of Nepal.

“Apparently they were thrilled to receive the donations, and organised special celebrations. It is quite humbling to think that what for us is a relatively small amount of money can make such a big difference to these people – and, because they have put it into educating their children, it will do so for future generations.”

The other charities which benefited from the team’s successful challenge were: The Alzheimer’s Society, MIND, My New Hair and Hope House Children’s Hospice in Oswestry.
